My website was hacked! Isn’t there software that can protect my database and files?

I have been working on a new website where users can subscribe to a newsletter and log in to a forum, but recently some hacker sent me an email with a list of all my subscriber’s emails and passwords!! It is optional to put your address so I even went the extra mile and got one of those security scan programs and keep my PC potected with Norton 360. Now I feel like I’ve been ripped off. I get a report that says my site was hacked then another with a list of all this sensitive information. Isn’t there something out there that can actually STOP hackers?

Security programs will protect your PC but have absolutely nothing to do with your website.

Your website obviously has very low security and was most likely hit by a hacker bot. Newsletters and forums are notorious playgrounds for hackers. Adding a captcha and other human verification devices will help your cause. Along with stronger passwords.

    Hi,
There could be following reason why the hacker hacked you

    1. He/she may have sent you a unconsolidated link and then hack your pc by installing a key logger or Trojan

clean it with avg anti virus or try Spybot search & destroy

    2. Another reason is may be the one of your web software is exlpoitabale by following
    mysql vulnerabilities
    cross side scripting
    database enumeration

Please upgrade your web software scripts to latest one or switch to others

i recommend you to run a acuntix security scanner scan on your website

    3. may be the hacker hacked your ftp details or control panel for webhost

    so change your passwords

    4. try to secure your wireless or dsl modem by implementing security

    5. try to update every thing on your pc to latest one like windows updates patches, software inside etc like IE .. Firefox

    6. Randomly visit milw0rm . com and check the latest exploits how hacker doing hacks

    7. Check the permission on sensitive file on your web host are properly set

    So first secure your self

To understand website security you should probably understand the main types of security that are available. Currently there are 3 major types, PC Security, Server Security and finally what you would be most interested in is Website Security.

PC Security such as McAfee or Norton is designed to be placed on your computer to protect just YOUR computer against website YOU visit. So if you visit a website that has spyware, malware, viruses on their site.

Server Security such as cPHulk Brute Force Protection or csf v4.40 will prevent hackers or attackers to access your server directly. By viewing your logs you will be able to see if they are attempting to access your cPanel or Plesk section of your site. If you are on a shared server like most people are do not have the ability to change server software.

Website Security such as SecureLive - I personally use this one on all of my sites (I didn’t link it because I don’t want people to think I am an affiliate trying to make money off of this) - This is the most difficult to explain, there are many types of so called security software in this category, such as Hacker Safe, Control Scan, Alert Scan, etc… Although the problem with them are they just scan to see what vulnerabilities your site has. Now I am not saying this is bad, but there a many you can not even control because a shared server won’t let you make changes. THEN what happens when they are NOT scanning. SecureLive is always on.

What is really cool about SecureLive, is not only does it block a ton of different features, but it also REPORTS the violation to their Internet Service Provider, PLUS it has a site uptime monitor to inform you when your site goes down, all in REAL TIME. Finally the last feature I REALLY love (Keep in mind it has a bunch more that I can not exactly remember) - Every site that has SecureLive installed on it maintains a global structure, if a hacker tries to attack Site A, Site B, and Site C your Site D is protected from all of the same hackers as A, B, and C and they are protected from all of the hackers that have attempted on your site.

Ok, sorry there are very few products that I believe in, and this is one of them…
